Trump administration considers using military to acquire Greenland

(MENAFN) The US government is evaluating multiple pathways to secure control over Greenland, with possibilities extending to military involvement, officials indicated on Tuesday.

A White House spokesperson said the issue is being treated as a strategic priority, stressing that the Arctic region plays a critical role in safeguarding US interests. As the official stated, "President Trump has made it well known that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority of the United States, and it’s vital to deter our adversaries in the Arctic region," according to reports.

The spokesperson further emphasized that discussions inside the administration are ongoing and encompass a wide spectrum of approaches. As explained, "The President and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, utilizing the U.S. Military is always an option at the Commander in Chief’s disposal," the official added.

These remarks follow a series of statements by President Donald Trump in which he has repeatedly argued that the island’s strategic location makes it essential to US defense planning.

Shortly after a US military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro, Trump again raised the idea of taking control of Greenland, framing it as a matter of security. When questioned about possible action, he said, “We need Greenland, from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it,” according to reports.

Greenland, while self-governing, remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark and has consistently dismissed any suggestion of transferring authority to the United States. Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has responded by calling on Trump to "stop the threats."
