French FM Urges Europe to Stand Strong Amid Global Power Strains
Speaking to French daily Liberation, Barrot described the main geopolitical challenge of the century as the increasing strain between Washington and Beijing. "In this equation, there is a variable that can change everything: Europe’s stance. Without seeking confrontation with either side, Europe can resist the brutalization of the world and chart a distinct path: a third way," he said.
Barrot called on the European bloc to “say no to all intimidation and coercion, wherever they come from,” and emphasized the need to accelerate strategic autonomy so that Europe “is not left exposed to the predatory ambitions of new empires.”
Highlighting past security dependencies, he cited US President Donald Trump’s Greenland takeover threats, noting that Europe’s unified response helped shift Washington’s position.
"The European Commission must clearly and firmly state that it stands ready to activate all the instruments at its disposal — including the most powerful ones — should Europe’s vital interests, such as its territorial integrity, the integrity of its electoral processes, or its decision-making autonomy, be threatened again in the future," Barrot said.
He added that the Greenland episode demonstrated that many European nations are “far stronger than some had believed” and stressed that the continent must now embrace its role as a major power capable of deterring threats to its interests.
