European leaders hail Trump’s framework of future deal on Greenland

(MENAFN) European leaders reacted positively on Wednesday to US President Donald Trump’s announcement outlining a framework for a future arrangement concerning Greenland, alongside his decision to halt planned tariffs targeting several European countries.

Denmark’s foreign minister described the development as a constructive shift, saying the situation had improved compared to earlier in the day. “The day is ending on a better note than it began. We welcome that POTUS (Trump) has ruled out to take Greenland by force and paused the trade war. Now, let’s sit down and find out how we can address the American security concerns in the Arctic while respecting the red lines of the KoD (Kingdom of Denmark),” he wrote on social media.

The Dutch prime minister also welcomed the move, calling it “positive” and noting that all sides appear to be moving “on the path to de-escalation.” He emphasized that the suspension of tariffs creates space for cooperation and stressed the importance of joint efforts among the United States, Canada, and Europe within NATO to enhance Arctic security and counter perceived threats from Russia and China.

Sweden’s foreign minister said it was encouraging that the United States had stepped back from imposing tariffs on countries that supported Denmark and Greenland. “Good that Trump has now also backed away from tariffs against us who have supported Denmark and Greenland. The demands for relocated borders have received well-deserved harsh criticism. That is also why we have repeatedly stated that we will not let ourselves be blackmailed. It seems that our work together with allies has had an effect,” she stated in an online post.

Sweden’s finance minister echoed those sentiments, saying the announcement demonstrated that European pressure had been “valuable.” She added that the government had consistently rejected what she described as coercive tactics linked to Greenland. “The government has consistently stressed that the blackmail surrounding Greenland has been absurd. But it also underscores what I have said several times: we are living in a new, uncertain world, but we also have our destiny in our own hands. I will continue my work to ‘Trump-proof’ our economy,” she said, adding, “We cannot afford to rest on our laurels.”

In Germany, the vice chancellor said that a combination of internal pressure within the United States and coordinated responses from Europe played a key role in prompting the US president to reverse course on the punitive tariffs he had previously threatened to impose on multiple European countries.
