NATO says Rutte didn’t offer Greenland sovereignty compromise to Trump
Speaking about the discussions held on the sidelines of an international economic forum, the spokesperson said the meeting between the NATO chief and the US president was “a very productive meeting,” adding that talks focused mainly on security issues in the Arctic and highlighted the region’s strategic importance for all alliance members, including the United States.
She said that ongoing discussions among NATO members regarding the framework mentioned by Trump are centered on strengthening Arctic security through joint efforts, particularly involving the seven NATO countries with Arctic territory. “Discussions among NATO Allies on the framework the President referenced will focus on ensuring Arctic security through the collective efforts of Allies, especially the seven Arctic Allies,” she said.
According to the spokesperson, talks involving Denmark, Greenland, and the United States are aimed at blocking any potential economic or military presence by Russia and China in Greenland. She stressed that the issue of sovereignty was not part of the discussions, saying: “The Secretary General did not propose any compromise to sovereignty during his meeting with the President in Davos.”
Trump said on his social media platform Wednesday that a framework had been agreed upon following his meeting with the NATO chief in Switzerland. “Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st,” he added.
Earlier, Trump had warned that the United States would impose tariffs on goods from several European countries starting Feb. 1, with higher rates planned later in the year unless an agreement was reached for what he described as “the complete and total purchase of Greenland.”
European leaders dismissed the tariff threats, reiterating their support for Denmark and emphasizing that any response would be coordinated at the European level.
