Mass protests erupt in Denmark, Greenland against US-Greenland threats

(MENAFN) Thousands of Danes and Greenlanders took to the streets on Saturday to voice opposition to recent US threats aimed at taking control of Greenland.

Demonstrations were reported in major Danish cities, including Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, and Aalborg, as well as in Greenlandic towns such as Nuuk, Aasiaat, Qaqortoq, and Ilulissat, according to reports. Participants repeatedly chanted that Greenland is “not for sale” and emphasized that the island belongs to its people.

In Copenhagen, Greenland’s public broadcaster reported that more than 15,000 people joined the protests, with demonstrators marching to the US Embassy to express their opposition. In Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, streets were expected to fill with residents sending a clear message to Washington, according to reports.

Greenland, which governs itself while remaining part of the Kingdom of Denmark, has attracted attention from the United States due to its strategic Arctic location, abundant mineral resources, and reported concerns about growing Russian and Chinese activity.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly insisted that the United States must acquire Greenland for national security reasons and to prevent Russia or China from gaining influence over the territory. Both Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected any proposal to sell the island, consistently reaffirming Danish sovereignty.
