Irish PM states U.S. purchase of Greenland not realistic
Speaking during an official visit to Shanghai, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said Greenland "is part of Denmark and the EU is rock-solid behind Denmark."
He added that "Common sense needs to prevail."
His comments came a day after the U.S. secretary of state told lawmakers that President Donald Trump intends to buy Greenland from Denmark. The White House has also said the Trump administration is weighing a “range of options” to acquire the territory, including the potential use of military force.
Martin noted that the United States has long maintained a military presence on the island and said Denmark’s prime minister has been in contact with Washington, making clear that any matters requiring resolution can be discussed in relation to the existing base.
"The US has always had a military base in Greenland and I know the Danish Prime Minister has been engaged with the White House and is very clear that any issues that need to be resolved are open to discussion in terms of the military base that’s there," he said.
Reiterating Ireland’s position, Martin emphasized that questions of sovereignty and territorial integrity fall solely under the authority of Denmark and the people of Greenland.
The latest White House remarks followed repeated statements by Trump expressing interest in acquiring Greenland for strategic reasons. One day after a U.S. military operation in Caracas that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Trump again promoted the idea of taking control of the island, citing “national security” interests.
